Original WWII
Anderson Shelter

In 1939 when World War 2 broke out, Britain's cities and towns were under the dreadful threat of bombing from the air.

One simple but often effective form of protection that was devised was the Anderson Shelter, made out of corrugated steel panels and erected in the gardens of thousands of homes across the UK.

Inside our restored shelter, which has been re-erected inside the Museum, are a number items that were common- place during those desperate days, including helmets, gas masks and aircraft identification charts.
