Alford Gallery
Wheelwright's Shop, Farm
Waggons, Silverton Smithy |
|
| Named after three
local brothers Fred, Ken and Ralph Alford whose family farm was at Netherexe
Barton near Thorverton. The Alfords
were great supporters of the Museum and together assembled many of the farm waggons on
display. |

|
|
| The Gallery
comprises three sections, a wheelwrights workshop, the waggon and cart display and
the blacksmiths workshop from Silverton. The tools in this latter
space were all owned and made by local blacksmith Archie Tremlett. |
|
|
The waggons comprise a small national collection featuring local
vehicles from Mid Devon and southern Exmoor. A regional type is
the Devon Ship waggon of which three are displayed.
All the waggons and carts have recently been the subject of a
major conservation project sponsored by the Heritage Lottery
Fund and the PRISM Fund. The work was done by a local Somerset
wheelwright. |
