Authers Gallery
The "Tivvy Bumper", Railway Equipment,
Grand Western Canal and Road Transport

William P. Authers was the third Curator of the Museum and a very active local politician. He was a great motivator and did a tremendous amount of work to establish us as a major museum in the South West. Opening of the Auther's Gallery 22nd Sept. 1979
Dominating the Gallery is the former Great Western Railway locomotive No.1442 (The Tivvy Bumper). This pulled the last train to Tiverton in October 1965 and was purchased by the Museum Trust with a very generous grant from Viscount Amory.

There are three others of this type at work in Britain, but, being static, this is the only one which is easily accessible to members of the public (both young and old!).

Surrounding the locomotive is a large display of railway memorabilia. Most of it is local and covers every aspect of the railways except rolling stock. Complementing the transport theme are two sections on the Grand Western Canal and road transport.

The main features of the latter display is an original turnpike gate and a Mini car. Bicycles and an early petrol pump and a display about the local origins of the rubber cycle patch are of great interest.
