Dicken Gallery
Reading the Landscape

Named after the Museum’s first Curator, Mr Eden Dicken, this Gallery describes the two main landscape types in Mid Devon and then explores its geology.

Man’s imprint upon the landscape is shown through the exploitation of water power and the creation of fields.

Frank Weslley, Rix Farm, Bolham Rd., 1910

Supporting this first major concept is a water-mill inter-active
which shows the processes of grinding, sawing and fulling.
The two main objects are a large Dartmoor granite trough used locally and an early horse-drawn Devon plough. This type of plough was advertised for sale in a book dated 1808 for 19s (95p).

Also in here is a lift to provide easier access to the upstairs Galleries.
