Upper Amory Gallery
Local History, Mid Devon
Civic Life and Industry |
|
| The Amory Galleries
are different from the previous ones because they do not focus on single themes. They are
named after Viscount Derrick Amory, who was Chancellor of the Exchequer in the late
1950s, and a great supporter of this Museum. In this wide airy upper space the themes are clocks and clockmakers, local
industry and public health.
Of note are the chiming grandfather
clock, the large coopers plane and the close juxtaposition of the themes of
birth and death, represented by baby-weighing scales and a coffin
(not used!). |

|
| Along the side
wall is a long chronology of dates of events in Britain, Mid Devon and Tiverton. In all
museums it is very difficult to make chronological displays because most of the objects
invariably come from the recent past. It is hoped that this attractive wall display will
put many of our displays into context. |
|
This
links our local history bar, where a touch-screen computer
carries a selection of photographic images (copies of which can
be ordered), with our
research library which is available for use by
the public by appointment on a Monday afternoon and all day
Wednesday.
Adjoining the Upper Amory
Gallery is a small display on architecture, building and building materials. Buildings
form a major part of our towns and villages and their contribution to the local history
and economy is not always fully appreciated. |
