Britton Gallery
Local Architecture and
Archaeology |
|
| Named after an early
supporter of the Museum, Louis Britton, this Gallery looks at the pre-history and
early history of Mid Devon.
Hand axes made some 400,000 years ago are on display from the
Lowman Valley which was an important east to west route for
pre-historic peoples settling and clearing the land. |

|
| A focal point of
the Gallery is the model of part of the Roman fort at nearby Bolham. Made
and presented by the Tiverton Archaeological Group, it features in great detail the western
gateway. |
|
| Other displays describe
aspects of the mediaeval development of Mid Devon together with a few of the many
fragments of German and Belgian pottery brought back as part of the wool trade. Culminating this section is a model of the siege of
Tiverton Castle in 1645 and some replica Civil War armour. |
