Discover more about our exciting project to install solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of the museum. This will create over three quarters of our annual electricity.
Why is there scaffolding up at Tiverton Museum of Mid Devon Life?
We are undertaking an exciting project; replacing the roof on the museum’s waggon gallery, and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. This will enable us to generate our own electricity.
How much of the museum’s electricity will be generated by the panels?
There will be 56 panels in total. We estimate that the panels will generate 15,130kWh of energy every year. This will generate 84% of the museum’s electricity use over the course of a year.
How does this improve environmental sustainability?
Solar panels are a renewable form of electricity generation. These panels will significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with our electricity. The panels, alongside other measures to reduce energy use (motion sensors on our lighting), enable us to reduce our carbon footprint.
When will the work take place?
The work is starting on 8th September and is expected to be finished by 20th October.
Will the work affect my visit?
The museum will remain open as usual. You may hear some noise from the roof, and there will be increased activity in the yard area within fenced off work compounds. We apologise for any noise inconvenience that this may cause.
Who is installing the solar panels?
This work is being coordinated by Cannings Energy (IIJ Cannings & Son Ltd). Sub-contractors are: roofing DJH Roofing and scaffolding Parker scaffold Ltd.
How is this work being funded?
Tiverton Museum is grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding this project, with match funding from the Foyle Foundation, and Mid Devon District Council’s Prosperity Fund.
